Retention is for Life: Protect Your Smile

January 17, 2017

Everyone gets retainers when they are finished orthodontics. Sometimes people lose their retainers and never bother getting a new one. Or perhaps you haven’t been wearing it often enough and it no longer fits. Whether it’s been weeks or years since you finished orthodontic treatment, if you’ve lost your retainer or it doesn’t fit, you need a new one!

Without a retainer your bite is unprotected and teeth are prone to shifting. Even years after treatment, a properly fitting retainer helps keep your smile as beautiful as the day your braces were removed. The cost of a replacement retainer is far less than undergoing orthodontic treatment again.

If you do require a new one you WILL require a new mould to be taken as the previous mould is actually destroyed in the process of fabrication. As well as your teeth may have shifted or your bite may have changed, even if you don’t think it has.

Remember to keep your retainers clean by brushing them daily with your toothbrush. NO TOOTHPASTE. If buildup starts to appear despite brushing you can try soaking them in vinegar for 15-20 minutes then brush and rinse very well.
