Managing Orthodontic Discomfort & Appliance Issues
While orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, issues with braces or clear aligners can sometimes happen. For significant discomfort or an appliance issue you can’t manage, contact our office for guidance.
Many common orthodontic concerns can be managed at home until you can visit our office. Knowing which part of your braces or aligners is causing the issue can help you manage discomfort in the meantime.
If your appliance is damaged or needs adjustment, contact our office to schedule an appointment, as delaying repairs may affect your treatment.
Below are tips for managing common orthodontic concerns until you can see your orthodontist.

How to Handle Common Orthodontic Concerns
Experiencing an orthodontic issue? Don't worry. These simple steps can help relieve discomfort and provide a temporary solution until you can contact us for further guidance or a repair appointment.
General Soreness
It's common to experience some soreness after getting braces or having an adjustment. Your teeth may feel tender for a few days, especially when eating. Rinsing with warm salt water can help soothe discomfort. You can also use an over-the-counter oral pain relief product or take your usual pain medication if needed.
Your lips, cheeks, and tongue may also need some time to adjust to the feel of your braces. Applying orthodontic wax to areas that feel irritated can help reduce rubbing and discomfort.
Loose Bracket
If a bracket or band becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and apply orthodontic wax if needed for comfort. If the bracket comes off completely, keep it safe and contact our office to schedule a repair.
Loose Wire
If a wire becomes loose or starts poking, you can try gently guiding it back into position using clean tweezers. Applying orthodontic wax over the area can help reduce irritation. If the discomfort continues or the wire cannot be repositioned, contact our office for assistance.
Loose Appliance
If part of your orthodontic appliance feels loose or is causing irritation, apply orthodontic wax to the area for temporary relief and contact our office for guidance.
Poking Wire
If a wire is irritating your cheek, lip, or gums, try gently moving it into a more comfortable position with a clean pencil eraser. You can also place orthodontic wax over the area to reduce irritation.
Lost or Damaged Aligner
If you lose or damage an aligner, contact our office so we can advise you on the best next step. Depending on how long you were wearing the aligner, we may recommend returning to your previous aligner or moving on to the next one.
The right option will depend on your individual treatment plan, so be sure to check with our team before making changes to your aligner schedule.
